3 Easy Tips To Hike the Red Rock Canyon in Spring 2022

There’s absolutely no doubt why most people head into Las Vegas. It’s a hotspot for people who love casino gaming, blockbuster shows, and massive sporting events.

Recently as KTNV.com reported that 70,000 people flocked from all over the US to watch the latest round of the NASCAR Cup Series. So, it’s easy to see why some assume that it’s all about casino venues and events that attract thousands, but for those who love to get out into the great outdoors, Las Vegas is also a fantastic place to up the ante when it comes to the best hikes in Nevada.

Red Rock Canyon is situated just a 20-minute drive from the sights and attractions of the city, and it attracts over 1.2 million visitors each year to its vivid red rocky landscape. Not only is it an attraction for those who love beautiful vistas, but it’s a place where visitors can find some of the best trails for walking in the country.

In fact, it’s so popular that hiking the Red Rock Canyon is one of the top ten things Poker.org suggest you do once the casino action comes to a head, and it’s easy to see why; open space, wonderful fresh air, and scenery that never fails to astound. There are no wonder poker players like to go all-in on their Red Rock Canyon experience once the dealer has packed the cards away.

However, whether you’re an experienced hiker or looking at going out to Red Rock for the first time, there are a few things to help you get the best out of the experience, and we’ve compiled some of those handy tips below.

How To Hike the Red Rock Canyon This Spring

#1. Preparation is the Key

Preparation is the key

Ahead of any hike or outdoor pursuit, you should always ensure that you’re equipped to sufficiently deal with the terrain and any potential minor scrapes. You’re going to be out walking on uneven terrain, lined with prickly vegetation in places. So, wearing good hiking-style shoes or athletic shoes is a must.

But you should also refrain from when it comes to wearing short garments and instead, wear garments with long sleeves and long pants. That way, if you are to have a brush with some of the plants that line some of the pathways, you’ll avoid some painful scratches.

But, just in case, we’d also suggest you pack a first aid kit in your bag, maybe consider one of the top ten we’ve featured previously here on Trekking Gears then you’re totally prepared if you were to take a little tumble and needed a band-aid.

#2. Be Weather Aware

While most would expect it to be scorching hot in the Nevada sun, and that is quite often the case, it certainly is helpful to look at the forecast before you head out on foot at Red Rock.

In December month, the Las Vegas Sun warned residents of the temperature dropping so much that there could be frost on the ground. Naturally, you need to dress appropriately to ensure you’re not caught out, even on days when it’s expected to get warm.

You are recommended that those setting out on early morning hikes layer up before the sun rises, then as things heat up, you can shed those layers and stay comfortable.

#3. Respect the Wildlife

Respect Wildlife

Remember, you won’t be the only thing out there in the wild, especially heading out onto the trails in spring. It’s not unusual to see various birds, small donkeys known as burros, various lizards, and even snakes.

While you may be an animal lover, giving any creature you see a wide berth and avoiding touching or feeding them is recommended.

If you’re taking your dog along with you on the walk, remember to keep them on a short leash. It is respectful to the wildlife in their habitat, but it also keeps your canine friend safe from potential harm.
